Semi ‘The Beast’ Kunatani is a vital cog in Fiji’s hopes of winning Olympic sevens gold in Rio next month.

The 24-year old has done it before in the World Sevens Series and fans should expect the Naqalimare, Navosa, native to strike again at an even bigger and global stage, the 2016 Rio Olympics.

This is a chance for our man to make a statement.

He was nominated for the world player of the year in the 2014-15 World series but was edged out by Werner Kok of South Africa.

He was player of the Final after his try-scoring performance helped Fiji to a third Cup win of the series in Hong Kong in April.

It was his intelligent attacking play that sealed the  21-7 win over New Zealand and it was a thrilling spectacle to behold.

Kunatani’s stats were the best of any player in Hong Kong, making 10 tackles, sevens breaks, 11 offloads and 22 carries. He also went over for five tries, showing his attacking potency.

He made his debut 2013 Dubai 7s and so far has been named in three World Rugby Dream Teams’ (Gold Coast, Las Vegas and Glasgow).

He was named by Sir Gordon Tietjens in his Hong Kong 7s Dream Team listing Kunatani on his bench in an all time Best Sevens team, joining the likes of Waisale Serevi, Jonah Lomu, David Campese, Eric Rush and many other greats of the game.

But the Rio Olympics is the pinnacle of sporting excellence. It’s where we turn athletes into Olympians. Other teams have secret weapon, X-Factor.  Fijians can rely on our ‘Beast’.
