Farmers Feedback Positive, Says Chetty

The Sugar Cane Growers Council has had positive feedbacks from the cane growers during the Prime Minister’s consultation tour in Rakiraki, Tavua and Ba over the past two days.

SCGC chief executive Sundresh Chetty said the feedback from the growers he had spoken to was overwhelming.

“The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainmarama, has resolved all their issues,” he said.

“There has been a lot of clarifications from Mr Bainimarama and the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in regards to a lot of the sugar issues.

“The growers have told me they now understand what the Reform of Sugar Cane Industry Bill, 2016 (Bill No. 19 of 2016) and the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (Amendment) Bill 2016 (Bill No. 20 of 2016) were.”

Mr Chetty said the cane farmers were looking forward to some of the new initiatives mentioned by Mr Bainimarama.

Mr Bainimarama said the new makeup of the SCGC where all eight cane growing districts would now have a representative on the Council.

Previously the Council had only six members.

Mr Chetty said he was speaking to growers during the consultations over the past two days and growers expressed their appreciation of the new-look council.
