A-G: Govt Has No Control Over Media

‘It’s quite apparent they spread a lot of misinformation, and Fiji Times have been doing this and they have a reporter who has been deliberately doing this.’

The Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said Government did not control the Fiji Times nor what was printed in their newspaper.

He made the clarification yesterday during consultations at Tuva Primary School in Nadroga.

This was in response from cane farmer Jahur Bashir Khan who had interjected Mr Sayed-Khaiyum while he was translating the Prime Minister’s speech into the Hindi language. Mr Khan referred to a report in The Fiji Times regarding an issue to do with the sugar industry.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum responded saying it was quite obvious that what Mr Khan was saying was why Government was allowing the printing of wrong information?

“We are saying obviously it is wrong information but we do not control the Fiji Times,” he said.

Mr Khan asked why Government did not close down The Fiji Times for doing this to which Mr Sayed-Khaiyum replied they did not control the newspaper and could not close it down. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said some people take news articles to be some form of formal notification.

“It simply is an article or an opinion piece or it is an opinion of some politician who is spreading misinformation,” he said.

“Unfortunately as we have seen the Fiji Times has repeatedly done this. They have repeatedly spread misinformation by publishing the comments of politicians in respect to these Bills.

“It’s quite apparent they spread a lot of misinformation, and Fiji Times have been doing this and they have a reporter who has been deliberately doing this,” he said.

When contacted last night Fiji Times editor-in-chief Fred Wesley said he had no information on what transpired at the meeting regarding the issue.

He said he would make a comment today.
