Tamavua villager Joeli Narara of Tamavua Village lost his left foot due to diabetes three months ago.

The surgery completely changed the life of the 55-year-old.

“I was very upset and disheartened when I learned I have high sugar and my leg was infected,” Mr Narara said.

“I could not believe that I was advised that my leg would be amputated.”

He had faced difficulties after his leg was amputated in April which brought about changes around his home whereby he would have to move around the house while being on the wheelchair.

“My wife and children are a great help to me as they take me around the community, the hospital while I am still trying to learn and adjust to a wheelchair.

“Before the surgery, my life was completely different. I used to go around the community and socialize with people. I used to do a bit of community work after I retired but since I lost my leg, I cannot go anywhere.”

Mr Narara said he had been practicing to walk with crutches while walking around the house to keep his right leg active.

“It is hard for me to keep the balance on the crutches but I am trying to walk with it. My great motivation is my wife who does everything she can for my convenience,” he said.

Wife 53-year-old Taina Narara said it was her duty and her responsibility to take care of her husband despite the situation he was in.

“I had told him the day he had his surgery, that I will never leave him alone and will be his pillar to walk on,” she said.

Mr Narara is the second member in his family, after his father went under the foot amputation surgery.
