Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the Fiji Sugar Corporation needs to be overhauled in the way it conducts business.

He made the comments after four days of consultations with cane farmers in the Western Division where there were a lot of issues raised over FSC’s operations and dealings with the growers.

The other major issue was the Bills that were presently with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Sugar which had held two rounds of consultations with cane farmers throughout Fiji.

“We have not only managed to talk about the Bills or the misinformation some people have spread about it but also talked about a lot of issues that have been in the system for awhile,” Mr Bainimarama said.

On FSC, Mr Bainimarama said the way FSC conducted its business needed to change.

“That is why we brought in Mr Vishnu Mohan as chairman and the new Permanent Secretary for Sugar Yogesh Karan,” he said.

“We need to change the system and a lot of policies which have been there too long.

“It came in during the days of the SPSM (South Pacific Sugar Mills) and is still there.

“FSC needs a good overhaul regarding all this.”

On the consultations, Mr Bainimarama said the response from the farmers had been very good. His team included the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Minister for Housing and Infrastructure Parveen Kumar, senior Government officials and other organisations.

“We have clarified a lot of misunderstanding the farmers had and I am happy,” he said.

The Bills in question were the Reform of Sugar Cane Industry Bill, 2016 (Bill No. 19 of 2016) and the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (Amendment) Bill 2016 (Bill No. 20 of 2016).
