The Fiji Outrigger Bank South Pacific (BSP) Business House Regatta Series 2016 will kick-off at 9am this Saturday at the USP Foreshore at Suva Point.

Once again BSP is the major sponsor for the event for the third year in a row and the bank has got behind the sport of outrigger canoeing in a serious way. Not only supporting the business house competition, but also supporting the Va’a team to the Pacific Games last year.

Fiji Outrigger president Colin Philp said BSP is continuing its tremendous support to this Pacific ocean sport by being the major sponsor for the 2016 business house regattas.

“And as per previous years, also entering two teams in the competition and joining them out on the water will be another 33 teams from more than 25 companies, and organisations,” he said.

Fiji Outrigger, the national federation for outrigger canoeing is the event hosts.

Philp said the first regatta is on Saturday with the second and final regatta in the series taking place on Saturday, August 20.

“All teams will surely be aiming to topple the Pacific Community (SPC) team who have won the overall trophy two years in a row. Business professionals, experienced and not-so-experienced male and female paddlers, families and friends will all gather again this year at the USP foreshore to show what they are made of and enjoy a day of fun by the water made possible by the generous support of BSP.”

Philp said 350 competitors from 35 teams would have their turn lining-up on the start line in the hope of being the first across the finish line to grab some glory and bragging rights.

Fiji Outrigger has held the business house regattas for over 20 years. Although, Philp says, it may be a minority sport in Fiji, outrigger canoeing is deeply rooted in the culture of the Pacific Island countries.

“Fiji Outrigger is proud to continue this cultural tradition by supporting its affiliated members and clubs through sponsorship, fundraising activities and raising awareness about this unique Pacific sport to youth, adults and communities throughout Fiji. For business houses it is a chance to have some fun on the water, while also engaging in a valuable team building activity which also promotes health and fitness.

“The 2016 Business House Regatta Competition would not be possible without the support of our major event sponsor, BSP. The values of outrigger canoeing, team building, respect for the environment and promoting good health are entirely in tune with BSP’s own culture and values, making BSP and Fiji Outrigger a perfect match for promoting this amazing sport,” he added.
