The Serua Kaji Rugby finals get underway at the Rampur school grounds on Saturday.

However, last Saturday, students battled it out in the semifinals with the mission to play in the finals. Serua Kaji Rugby president Ilisoni Tagicakiverata said they are expecting a sea of colours just like last week where students, parents, guardians and supporters of the five schools gathered to cheer on their teams.

The participating schools are: Rampur Primary School, Lomary Catholic Primary School, Ratu Latianara Memorial School, Deuba District School and Pacific Harbour Multicultural School.

“The favourable weather condition last Saturday also came as a relief to us as we were spearheading the competition since it was raining on most of the days in Serua. There were speculations that we might have to postpone the semifinals but it did not dampen the spirit of the players and the die-hard fans of the participating schools from insisting and pleading for the semifinals to go ahead.”

Finals line-up

He said semifinals ended with mixed results as Lomary Catholic Primary School to feature in all the grade finals. The finals line-up are as follows:

             U9: Lomary Catholic v Rampur Primary

             U10: Lomary Catholic v Ratu Latianara

             U11: Lomary Catholic v Rampur Primary

             U12: Lomary Catholic v Rampur Primary

             U14: Lomary Catholic v Ratu Latianara

Tagicakiverata said the ground is set for the 2016 Serua Kaji Rugby finals.

“I salute the head teacher of Rampur Primary School, Mr Suresh Chand and the management of Rampur Education Society for giving us the green light to host the 2016 Serua Kaji Rugby grand finals at their grounds,” he said.

“All the schools represented in the finals are raring to showcase their rugby potentials and skills on what they have to offer to the whole province of Serua at the Rampur grounds. I’m pleading to all parents, supporters and rugby lovers in the province to be at the Rampur school grounds.”

Special tribute

Tagicakiverata said in a bus accident last year, they lost one of their very supportive parent.

“So all the players playing in the finals will be wearing black armbands to show our sympathy and condolence to Mrs Rounds who will always be remembered and cherished in our lives especially our gallant Serua resilient rugby players who were also travelling in the same bus that veered off the road near Makosoi Road in Pacific Harbour. They were returning from the national meet in Suva where the Serua U10 team were the bowl winners.”

Tagicakivereta added that he wants to wish all teams featuring in the finals the very best and may the best prepared team win.
