Team Fiji men’s football Olympic captain and Wellington Phoenix striker, Roy Krishna, is now the 4FJ Movement Champion.

Krishna has taken the 4FJ pledge not to eat, buy or sell kawakawa and donu during their peak breeding months from June to September.

Krishna joins a distinguished group of champions from across sectors who have publicly stood up to help reverse the declining stocks of these two fish by encouraging their families and friends to take the pledge.

“I come from an Indian background and I love kawakawa curried and spicy, especially my mother’s home-cooked ones.

That’s normally the first thing I eat when I come home,” he said, while taking a break from his training at the Fiji Football Academy early this week. “And I don’t want to come back home to a Fiji where I can’t eat my mum’s kawakawa fish curry. That’s why I am asking the people of Fiji to get behind this campaign.”

The campaign aims to allow the fish to release their eggs each year, so there are more fish the rest of the year. More than 9,000 have publicly pledged across the country, with many more taking the pledge privately.

Scott Radway, founder of cChange, the non-profit organisation that created the campaign, said Krishna is a huge addition to the campaign, as he is Fiji’s most popular football player and role model for many.

“Roy is using his popularity as Fiji’s best soccer player to help boost the stocks of fish that communities in Fiji depend on for food and income, not to mention their traditions,” Radway said.

“That’s a great show of character and we can’t thank him enough for bringing this campaign to all his fans.”

To join Krishna in his pledge, text (1) your name, (2) village or town, and (3) “I pledge” to 7189537. To follow the campaign, visit www.facebook.com/4fjmovement.
