The Western Amateur Boxing Association (WABA) has expressed their support for welterweight boxer Winston Hill and the Team Fiji contingent for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, WABA president Faiyaz Ali said, Hill’s participation at the Olympics has encouraged young people that nothing is impossible if they are able to work hard for it.

“Winston has been training hard for the past years. He has set a good example and is very disciplined and focused. This is the sort of thing many of our young people have learnt from Winston and are now coming out trying to develop their sporting talents.”

Ali said for amateur boxing to be able to send a boxer to the Olympics after a lapse of 28 years is a great achievement for the sport.

“Also, we’ve seen that some young athletes in other sports have also made it to Rio and this is something that is pushing our young people into sports. The onus is now on us the administrators to make it work so they could stay on to participate.”

With Hill going to the Olympics, Ali says, he is confident that come the 2020 Olympics there will be more amateur boxers going as well.

“But for now we the WABA would like to wish Winston and Team Fiji well as they go out and battle the world’s best in Rio. We are with you all the way and our prayers that you will be safe and do well in the Olympics,” he added.
