Vasu debate

Some fierce debate is raging over a suggestion that children (Vasu) of iTaukei mothers and non-iTaukei men should be allowed to be registered to the mothers’ clans in the VKB (Vola ni Kawabula). Some say we should stick with the status quo which means don’t change it and Vasu cannot be registered. Only children whose fathers are iTaukei.

Others say it’s discriminatory and not in harmony with the 21st century.

The latest to join the fray is Adi Litia Qionibaravi, the general secretary of SODELPA.

She said: “The call for a blanket rule fails to recognise the underlying grounds or reasons for the customary practices in Fiji.

“The SSV (Soqosoqo Vakamarama) executive must not ride on the women’s rights convention (CEDAW or the child rights treaty) as vehicles to bring about unwelcome changes to customary rules.”
