A pilot programme by the Fiji Yachting Association came to a successful ending yesterday with 29 students from the Fiji Maritime Academy graduating with certificates at the National Sailing Centre.

Association volunteer Sonia Robinson said the day was dedicated to the students who had demonstrated their sailing abilities to staff members and parents who were at the graduation.

“This is where they learnt sailing skills. Where they got the opportunity to learn sailing in a practical sense not just theoretically,” she said.

“None of them had any experience in the beginning of the programme but at the end of the eight weeks they had learnt about sailing small boats called dinghies. This was done with the Fiji Yachting Association instructors who were running the dinghy programme.”

Robinson reiterated that this was a pilot programme which they have trialed for the years to come.
