Team Fiji’s lone female swimmer to the Rio Olympics Matelita Buadromo is going to have two of her biggest supporters on the pool side.

Yesterday, the 20-year-old swimmer was among the Team Fiji contingent that flew out of the country along with her mum and younger sister.

Mum Tipo said she was proud to be accompanying her daughter to the world’s biggest sporting event.

“We’ve always been behind Matelita right from when she started swimming,” she said.

“We look forward to travelling with her because I don’t travel with her on her international meets– this is the first time I’ll be accompanying her”.

Matelita said she is hoping to beat her personal best time of 2:05:05 in the 200m women’s freestyle.

“I’m excited and looking forward to arriving in Rio de Janeiro. It’s been a bit nerve-wrecking in the days leading up to now.

“Some of the other swimming teams have already arrived in Rio and I’ll be doing my best while there.

“I went to the 2012 Olympics on a wild card call and it was an epic experience. I know what to expect and I know it’s going to be a very difficult competition”.

The Team Fiji contingent flew out to Auckland, New Zealand where they caught a connecting flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina, before flying over to Rio.
