Veresa Naceno was lost in thought as he reflected on the transforming power of painting in his life.

For someone who only recently discovered this talent, Mr Naceno said it was not an accidental discovery, but a ‘God-given gift waiting to be exposed at the right time’.

“Painting takes away my burdens. I have no time to worry about how long my sentence is because it requires full concentration. Every part of me is occupied – my heart, mind and hands,” he said.

“Painting has changed my life. It has comforted my soul, it brings so much relief because what you keep in your thoughts and heart is what you express in drawings.

“I didn’t know anything about art as a youngster and only took interest in it while at the Naboro minimum facility where the most common activity was farming. I started with pencil work and carvings. I prayed and asked the Lord to help me learn.”

Mr Naceno is more into portraits as his main genre of painting.

With another seven years of his sentence remaining, Naceno says he doesn’t regret his experience.

“I accept it. We can’t keep making mistakes or winning all the time, when it’s time to change, we must change.”
