Nadi Muslim College emerged as the overall winner of the inaugural Nadi Social Science Teachers’ Association debate competition at Swami Vivekananda College.

Sangam SKM College (SSKMC) were the runners up and best overall speaker prize was awarded to Shainel Sahay of Mulomulo Secondary School.

Nadi Social Science Teachers’ Association chairperson Bijesh Chand Nath said: “Seven secondary schools from the Nadi district participated in this event.

“Moving away from the conventional inter-school competitions such as oratories and quizzes, this could be seen as a revival of debates in secondary schools.

“Such competitions set the platform to groom our future generation for various prospective professions such as lawyers, politicians, teachers, journalists and social activists.”

Mr Nath said it was evident that students had ample talent which only needed exposure in the school system.

“This was a stepping stone for the organisers and a proud moment for the association,” Mr Nath said.

Mr Nath confirmed that there would be debate competitions organised in future.
