Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has called on  people to shame users who misuse social media to send out hate mail.

“People are especially targeting innocent people of religion and ethical grounds which are stirring up hatred and division,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama raised his concern at the University of the South Pacific Open Day at Laucala campus yesterday.

He said social media like Facebook or Twitter could be a powerful force for good, in keeping people connected and for the exchange of information and ideas.

“That is how I would encourage you all to use it – as a means of bringing people together. But unfortunately there are some individuals and groups roaming cyberspace who are trying to stir up hatred against their fellow Fijians on ethnic or religious grounds.

“I ask you all to do what you can do to expose such people.

“I urge you all to shame people and confront their messages of hate and act of violence.

“Some individuals and groups roam around cyberspace who stir up hate by setting up fake accounts and stealing people’s identities,” he said.

He said it was not a question of threatening free speech.

“Political criticism was acceptable and an important part of our democracy,” he said.

“But stirring up hatred and violence against someone because of their ethnicity and religion is a crime under the Fiji Law and the laws of many other countries.”

Mr Bainimarama said the Government would come down hard on people who were engaged in this unlawful behaviour.

He reminded young people at the event, to exercise freedom of expression in a useful manner as it was a vital part of our Constitution.

He said “with great freedom, comes great responsibility.”
