Work continues on the Wailevu West Coast Road with a one-kilometre section being widened and re-sealed, according to Fulton Hogan Hiways Savusavu depot stabilising supervisor, George Hughes.

Wailevu West Costal Road is located 35km from Savusavu connecting Nabouwalu/Labasa to the Savusavu main highway at Naibalebale Village.

“The section that sits between Vativa and Naloaloa villages and faces Batibalavu District School was initially sealed years earlier, but through normal wear and tear from local traffic as well as carrying the added burden of logging trucks has deteriorated and needed immediate attention, Mr Hughes said.

To normalise the section work included widening the road from three metres to six metres, as well as grading, compacting and gravelling with crushed rocks, stabilising and sealing.

In addition, 40km of unsealed road has already been re-sheeted and widened.

“School children who often found it difficult to use the road when it rained now find it safe and secure. The improved road has made all the difference to them.  Thank you Fulton Hogan,” said Tokai Vatudamu, the head teacher of Batibalavu District School.

Working closely with Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Fulton Hogan Hiways continues to provide road maintenance in the Central, Eastern and Northern divisions. This work is another example of their ongoing commitment.
