A report detailing crime statistics between January and June this year has noted that children as young as three months were victims to assault-related crimes.

The Fiji Police Force report showed that 34 cases involved children up to the age of five years old. These cases included rape, sexual assault, attempted murder, attempted rape.

Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said during a presentation last week:  “This is a concern as the issue of domestic violence is still not being treated seriously by some people.”

Overall, it was noted that crime against women and children had reduced by two per cent.

He said: “It is also an indication that women are more aware about their rights and their knowledge of the laws which have encouraged them to report crimes.”
