Ministry Launch Database

A new development by the Transport ministry will allow transport stakeholders to access relevant information to the way Fijians travel through various modes of transport.

The first phase of the National Transport Planning Database and Transport Policies were launched by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Kumar at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Hotel convention centre.

Mr Kumar said the database would complement the work undertaken by transport planners and further assisted Government in making sound policy advice that would enhance development in the transport sector.

“Transport stakeholders such as the Land Transport Authority can access information relevant to the way people travel and the modes of transport used by the people of Fiji.

Mr Kumar said the database could also assist the maritime industry by providing the purpose of why people travel in the maritime islands.

“It also assists policy makers in ascertaining the level of economic activities generated in the rural and maritime islands,” he said.

Mr Kumar outlined the policies, Maritime and Land transport, had identified and mapped the direction in the transport sector by creating opportunities for investment in our economy.

“The Transport Policy will provide an affordable and equitable balance between transport services that serve our economic sectors and those that provide reliable access to our widely distributed population,” he said.

“These policy documents will set the environment to promote economic development, promote a safe and environmentally friendly transport system.”

The launch comes after the completion of the first phase of Household Travel Survey (HTS) by the transport ministry earlier this year.

The HTS is the largest and most comprehensive source of personal travel data ever collected in Fiji, providing a comprehensive picture of trip making on travel patterns of Fijians.
