It was an emotional visit yesterday for the former Commissioner of Police John Orme who paid a courtesy call on current Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho at the Fiji Police Force headquarters in Suva.

Mr Orme served as the Commissioner of Police from 1978 to 1981 and since his departure for the United Kingdom in 1981, had not returned until this current visit.

Accompanied by his wife Barbra, the couple called on the Commissioner of Police and senior officers before a visit to the Police Special Response Unit in Narere, where former Police officers were also on hand to welcome the couple.

In welcoming the couple, Brigadier General Qiliho said it was an honour and privilege to host the former Commissioner of Police adding he was trying to encourage more interactions with former police officers.

“Sir, your visit is indeed timely as I personally believe an area we need to look into is working on having the continued relationship with our retired officers who can do so much to help us in our work,” he said.

“I feel this is an area we need to make use of and rope in the services of former police officers, because with their wealth of experience and knowledge we are certain to learn a lot from them.”

In his address to current and former serving officers at the PSRU, Mr Orme said he was proud of what he had been witnessing with the Fiji Police Force.

“I would like to thank your current Commissioner for making today’s visit possible and for extending the invitation to those former officers who served with me and it is indeed great to see them here today.

“Here we are more than 30 years on, I never thought in my wildest dream that I would be accorded this sort of welcome and the impression that I’ve got is that the Fiji Police Force is in very good hands.”
