Lifeline Fiji’s National Crisis Helpline has recorded 4313 call since its launch on February 26.

This was revealed during its third year celebration and the launch of its website in Suva yesterday.

Lifeline Fiji executive director, Archana Mani said: “The support services received tremendous calls from people who were traumatised by Cyclone Winston.

“The support service was available to people regardless of age, gender, religion, ethnicity and religion,” she said.

Ms Mani said in terms of community response, the staff are trained to deliver psychological first aid in natural disaster and other crisis events.

Their number 132-454 was a confidential telephone crisis support service available across Fiji and is operating  24/7.

She said a total of 124 suicide deaths occur in Fiji every year.

In the last five years, there had been reports of 630 suicides among 1199 suicide attempts.

At the event, Minister for Women’s, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar congratulated Lifeline Fiji for their in depth work in spite of being a young organisation.

“Every life is precious and we need to work together to support each other and stop the blame game when suicide or crisis occurs,” she said.
