Every person going on the road has a high risk of injury or death, thus the public needs to pay special attention to road safety.

The comment was made by Vodafone Hibiscus King contestant, Aseri Mataunicere.

The 26-year-old, originally from Savusavu, said: “People neglect road safety rules until an accident occurs.

“Everyone should strictly follow all the rules, signs of road safety and road traffic lights to be safe.

“Also basic awareness about vehicles, defensive driving, wearing seat belts and making use of vehicle mirror.

“This plays a great role in protecting people from road accidents by making them responsible pedestrians.”

Mr Mataunicere said relevant authorities should introduce harsher penalties for road offenders.

“I think the speed cameras installed by LTA are doing justice as more motorists are issued fined as compared to before when they get away with it,” he said.

“The Government is doing its job with raising awareness, but people need to be proactive about road safety.”

Mr Mataunicere, who was a volunteer at the Fiji Media Watch, is sponsored by Trendy Fashion.

His advocacy message is in line with the Vodafone Hibiscus theme: ‘Road Safety – It’s everyone’s responsibility’.

The Vodafone Hibiscus Festival will take place from August 12 to 20.
