Rarawai Mill in Ba is not operating to its full capacity as it only receives 55 per cent of daily sugarcane required to operate the mill fully.

This was confirmed by the general manager Sailasa Waitawa.

“However this is better than the 20 per cent we were receiving in the first week of the crushing at mill.”

Mr Waitawa confirmed the Rarawai mill has crushed 14,623 tonnes of cane and produced 723 tonnes of sugar until Monday.

“Our pre-class estimate/forecast for production was 401,000 tonnes which included 100,000 tonnes from Rakiraki district, but our production forecast is being reviewed and will be finalized this week.”

Meanwhile the President of the Rarawai, Penang Cane Producers Association, Girish Kumar, is requesting sugar industry stakeholders to meet and come up with an action plan to assist cane farmers in Ba and Rakiraki.

His request came after the Rarawai Mill sought several hours of closure everyday due to the low sugarcane supply.

“The mill stops operating for a certain period of time every day, at least six to seven hours due to low cane supply.”

He said farmers were also facing problems in harvesting cane and high rates of cane cutters.

“Apart from this the farmers need to revamp camp houses but they don’t have the money to do so.”

He said there were issues faced by the farmers which needed to be brought to light, not only spoken about but to action.
