It is everyone’s responsibility to understand the sustainable use of the environment to protect us from the ravages of climate change, says Meleti Bainimarama.

The Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime development and Natural Disaster Management made this comment while opening the awareness workshop on Climate Change and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD).

“The recent Cyclone Winston had huge impact on the sustainability of the environment and we have ourselves to blame.”

He said climate change influenced natural and living condition thus affecting social and economic development.

“A lot of work has been done to relocate people in coastal areas due to the rise in sea level and climate change,” he said.

He said the work in the district office around the country has changed considerably in terms of developments projects on climate change.

“When I worked in the field for the past 20 years, there was no talk of climate change, but now we are feeling the effect of development of developed countries.

“This was a fact whether we like it or not. The sustainability of development project will depend on how well you deal with the environment,” he said.

The two day workshop was organised by the Fiji REDD, Ministry of Rural and Maritime development and National Disaster Management and the climate change division at Holiday Inn in Suva yesterday.
