Around $5.4million through the Help for Homes Initiative was spent on people affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston in the province of Naitasiri.

This was revealed by the Naitasiri provincial administrator, Koroka Balemaiwai, during the provincial meeting in Vunidawa yesterday.

He said the initiative had assisted close to 1439 families.

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu, who was the chief guest, said questions were raised from the province regarding Government’s assistance after the cyclone.

He said the total cost of damage in Fiji left by Tropical Cyclone Winston was more than $2billion.

“It’s time that  the province should work together in preparing awareness on cyclones as this is also one of the places affected in Fiji during natural disasters,” he said.

“This, including the construction of homes to be built in such a way to withstand cyclones.”

Mr Seruiratu reminded the province that they needed to conserve their natural resources.

“Use natural resources around you wisely, these are water and land resources so it can be sufficient for your future generation,” he said.

Mr Seruiratu said Government had come up with many initiatives to assist people affected by Winston.
