Abortion Case Moved To High Court

A  56-year-old woman charged for abortion was yesterday granted bail by the Nausori Magistrate Court.

Magistrate Vandhana Lal said it was an indictable offence and transferred the matter to the High Court in Suva.

Vinita Devi has been granted a surety bail with strict bail conditions.

Defence lawyer Nacani Bulisea presented two sureties who have to pay a surety bond of $1000 each.

The bail conditions are that Devi is not to change her residential address, she is not to interfere with prosecution witnesses and she is to present herself to the Nausori Police station every Saturday anytime between 6am to 6pm. The victim was a 22-year-old girl on whom Lal allegedly performed the abortion.

The court has been adjourned to August 12 for first call.
