Ratneshwar Singh’s world had crumbled on Monday when his home was razed and all his family mementos  were destroyed.

This prompted an immediate response from Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar who issued a plea to people all over Fiji to take every care during this dry season and prevent homes from being burned.

The 46-year-old cane farmer of Tavarau, (between Lautoka and Ba), was however, determined to put his life back.

He was lost for words yesterday when Ms Akbar visited him.

Besides receiving a tent as a temporary, shelter, Mr Singh, a bachelor, was given $1000 for him to buy immediate necessities and $500 worth of food items and pillows and mattresses.

“I have never come across such response and this is the first time I have come across this.

“I am without words to describe my appreciation to Government and especially the Minister,” Mr Singh said.

Ms Akbar also directed her staff to assist Mr Singh in his application for help under the Government’s Home Initiative Scheme.

“It takes a lot of time for people to build what they call a home and it takes only one fire to take away everything.

“Homes are built with a lot of hard work and passion,” she said.

The fire, on Monday, completely destroyed the five-bedroom home.

Mr Singh said he was at a neighbour’s place when the fire started and his relatives living next to his house had to evacuate his younger brother and sister-in-law who were asleep.

“The fire started from a part of the sitting room where there was no power point or electrical wire,” he said.

Police and the National Fire Authority are investigating the cause of the fire.
