It was a proud moment for Mereseini Nabuatu, 82, seeing her granddaughter graduate yesterday, she recalled the humble beginnings raising her in the village of Nanokonoko in Ra.

“I used to babysit my three grandchildren while their mother went to look for food to feed the family.               Today’s (yesterday’s) graduation; all the hard work in raising them has paid off,” Ms Nabuatu said.

Granddaughter, 18-year-old Nalini Kumar, was among the 22 students who graduated from the Fiji National University (FNU) under the College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism.

Ms Kumar, who attended Armadia Muslim College in Narere, said the decision to join tertiary after finishing her Year 12 studies was a good one after graduating with a Certificate of Attainment in Commercial Cookery.

“At a young age, I’ve always wanted to be a chef and I’m thankful to my family for their support in helping me achieve my dream,” she said.

“Even though my parents are overseas, I’m blessed my grandmother is still around that I can share my success.”

Guardian Suman Kumar said Nalini was like a daughter to her after raising her since Year One in primary school.

Ms Kumar raised Nalini while she was getting her schooling in Suva.

Nalini has come a long way since.

“My daughter would come home with new recipes that she has learned and we would try it out for dinner,” Ms Kumar said referring to Nalini’s course work at FNU.

“It was our downtime as we share the same passion for cooking.”
