Parents and teachers have been reminded to value pre-schoolers because optimising learning at this stage would secure their future.

Chief Guest at the Macuata/Bua Pre-school Week Celebration launch at the Subrail Park in Labasa, Saint Mary’s Primary School head teacher Seini Vakaloloma said pre-school learning was of great importance.

“The emotional, social and physical development of children has a direct effect on their overall development and the type of adult they become,” Mrs Vakaloloma said.

“Children are like learning sponges when they are young.

“Every new experience, every new word they learn, every behaviour, they adopt is an investment to their future.”

She said the role parents and teachers played in this respect were utterly significant in moulding a better nation.

“Early childhood teachers play a vital role in the development of education in our nation,” Mrs Vakaloloma said.

“You are a role model to these lovely little children. They look up to us for guidance, care, someone to imitate and someone to trust.”

She also pleaded with parents to step up and be more attentive to their children’s needs.

“Looking at our society today most of our little ones are being abused in their own families,” she said.

“Our children should not be afraid to open up and share their problems with their parents.

“They are bound to make mistakes and as parents we must be ready to accept this fact and be ready to talk to them and offer solutions.

“We must handle this with gentleness, love and care.”

More than 500 pre-schoolers from 55 schools in the provinces of Bua and Macuata converged at Subrail Park in Labasa Town for the launching of the Macuata/Bua Pre-school Week Celebration.
