24-year-old Shivagni is a final year scholar pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting and Management at the Fiji National University.

Women empowerment should not only be a belief but inspiration enough for women in the country to be independent.

These were the sentiments shared by 24-year-old business-woman Shivagni Rao who runs Rao’s Catering in Labasa.

She said her involvement in business was inspired by her mother who was a market vendor.

Ms Rao said her humble beginnings and her parents’ support was a big influence for her success in business.

“I provide catering services for special events like birthdays, launchings and weddings amongst others,” Ms Rao said.

“My catering service encourages the involvement of women especially young women.

“Business has so far been good and I plan to expand my business from where it is now.”

She said her speciality was Indian sweets and cuisine but if requested she could provide other menus.

The final year Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Management student at the Fiji National University said the revenue generated from the business funded her studies.

“I am not a scholarship student and I have been able to pay my fees from what I earn in this trade,” she said.

She called on women to be independent and start their own businesses.

The Vunivau, Labasa, lass said there were a lot of avenues that could be pursued to ensure that women were able to support themselves. She was running a stall at the ongoing Miss Youth North Carnival in Labasa and said business was going well.
