Justice Salesi Temo handed down a mandatory 21 years imprisonment before he could be considered for a presidential pardon

A 43-year-old man from Kadavu was yesterday jailed for life for the murder of his wife and the manslaughter of his mother-in-law by the High Court in Suva.

Sitiveni Qio Vasuturaga has a mandatory term of 21 years that he needs to serve before a presidential pardon can be considered.

Justice Salesi Temo said: “You have unnecessarily taken the life of your wife for a problem that arose which could have been solved in a peaceful way.

“Although your mother-in-law was harsh on you, you had no right to take her life and you showed no regard for her life.

“You should not complain when your liberty is taken away from you.”

On August 10, 2014 Vasuturaga stabbed his wife Elenoa Waqaicece two times and stabbed his mother-in-law Salaseini Kunayasi 11 times in Namuana Village in Kadavu for which he had pleaded guilty.

The court has given him 30 days to appeal.
