Cakaudrove Joins The Fight Against Marijuana Cultivation

People of the once famous ‘Golden Triangle’ in the province of Cakaudrove are putting up a fight to in eradicate drug cultivation in their communities.

The ‘Golden Triangle’ include the Natewa and Tunuloa districts.

The mata-ni-tikina Tunuloa, Eneriko Matanisokula, said there was a crime committee in each village that were closely monitoring criminal activities within their community.

“We are working together as a community to fight against this and we continuously issue advice to our community members in this area,” Mr Matanisokula said.

“We have also been encouraging farmers to cultivate yaqona and dalo ways to earn money for their families and so far there have been a lot of them who have taken up this venture.”

The Commissioner Northern, Jovesa Vocea, said a Government team would visit all villages in these two districts to help them find an alternative sources of income.

“All relevant Government departments will be a part of this two week program to help address this issue,” Mr Vocea said.

“We will be looking at all viable avenues that can assist these villagers with their livelihood.”

Mr Matanmisokula said assistance, like the one set for next week, was always welcomed and they looked forward to it.

Several attempts to contact the mata-ni-tikina Natewa, Isimeli Koli, were unsuccessful.

A tip-off from the public led to Police confiscating over 20 plants believed to be marijuana from Tukavesi, in the Natewa district last week.

In an earlier interview, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro continued to urge the public’s support in the fight to eliminate marijuana from communities.

“Their assistance would greatly help us in eradicating this illicit trade and when we work together we can produce positive results.”
