Sewing quality made clothing can be a powerful source of revenue creation.

This was the comment made by Alefina Maniela, 18, a student at Adi Cakobau School on Friday during their mini concert in Sawani.

She said the concert was an avenue for students to showcase their skills learned from the different clubs as part of their extracurricular classes.

“There are 22 of us girls in the sewing class and it took us five weeks to put everything together which was a team effort,” she said.

Ms Maniela said their displays included pillow cases, dyed sulu, t-shirts, dolls and dresses.

“I don’t normally consider sewing fun, but being part of the club, I found sewing to be artistic, having an eye for detail and being independent,” she said.

“My mum has a sewing machine and I will be helping her with making home decoration and gifts that we can sell and make money during the holidays.”

Problem-solving

School Principal Laisa Soko said: “Students were given the chance to pick whatever clubs they were interested in to boost their problem-solving skills.

“This was a holistic approach as students don’t normally get this form of learning in the classroom.”

She said the clubs included culture, choir, creative and construction, sewing, baking, environment, media and awareness and first aid clubs.

“The girls have been putting in a lot of effort in showcasing what they learned in their different clubs,” she said.

Ms Soko thanked the teachers for their hard work and parents for their continued support in making the event a successful one.
