Send Complaints In Writing, Parents Told

Parents have been urged to follow the correct procedure when lodging complaints about teachers and school management.

This was highlighted during a one-day education forum in Labasa this week by Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts director corporate services, Releshni Karan.

A man had complained to the Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy, about the inappropriate behaviour of a teacher at a primary school.

Ms Karan said parents should inform the school heads first, and if there was no resolution then they should inform the respective education district office who will forward it to Ministry of Education.

The man had complained that his three granddaughters were allegedly discriminated by a teacher.

“I had discussion with the school management about allowing my three granddaughters to wear long pants to school (salwar) to which they agreed,” he said.

“However, the very next day the assistant head teacher forced my Year Eight granddaughter to fold her pants at knee-length in front of all students in the classroom.

“I spoke to the school management and head teacher and there was no solution to this.”

“Hence, I took all my five grandchildren out from this school and got their admission done at another school. Such kind of discrimination cannot be acceptable from teachers.”

However, Ms Karan is urging parents to put their grievances in writing or inform the ministry through a phone call.

“Then we can begin officially with an investigation because the teachers are our employees and we have to ensure fair investigation,” she said.

Minister Reddy said if parents had issues with a school, the ministry would be happy to examine them and resolve them amicably.
