The National Fire Authority is investigating a fire at the Labasa Fiji Sugar Corporation mill on Saturday night.

NFA confirmed that they had attended to the fire after a call was made to their office.

The NFA said that the machine on fire was a loader which the firemen managed to contain before it could spread to other parts of the mill.

It is understood that a loader is used to stack canes in a heap before it is carted into a set of iron plates called the carrier which initiates the cane crushing process.

NFA said they were doing their best to identify what triggered the fire to curb any possibility of a repetition.

The FSC Labasa mill general manager Karia Christopher said he did not wish to comment before the NFA concluded their investigations.
