Established Fijian artist Lambert Ho believes there is potential in the art industry here for young and budding artists.

“You can earn a lot of money from it, being your own boss, but you’ve got to find your own leash and you got to find your own style.

“As a young person, you can exhibit locally and ask senior artists to help take you internationally,” he said.

Mr Ho made these remarks while exhibiting his art at the second Na Koro Market at the Fiji Museum in Suva yesterday.

The 46-year-old, who is of mixed Chinese heritage, mainly works with paint on canvas as well as experimenting with various mixed including handpainted fashion, sculpture and recyclable art.

He has also been involved in a number of local and international art exhibitions.

“I’ve been doing this ever since I was in kindergarten, it’s a God given talent to basically portray my emotions,” he said.

Mr Ho also works with a lot of NGOs (non-governmental organisations) and other institutions such as the Yellow Ribbon Project to promote art therapy.

“It is an amazing way of getting people to talk about their problems,” he said.

“We need to come together as artists to collaborate more on helping the community as well.”

Mr Ho said the art industry here was a thriving industry which is attracting a lot of interest.

“There are a lot of art lovers who buy art for their own use especially with the expat community,” he said.

“You got to get up and take your art to the people. People won’t come to you unless you take your art door-to-door or have a good network of people,” he said.

Mr Ho also works with the Waisiliva Art Gallery at Lelevuia Island Resort which offers a unique insight into the world of contemporary Pacific art among other resorts in the Western Division.
