The National Disaster Management Office is advising the public to act with caution as a trough of low pressure brings continuous rain into the Fiji group.

The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Permanent Secretary Meleti Bainimarama said that the continuous rain could cause flooding in flood prone areas and appropriate measures should be taken accordingly.

“For those that live near rivers, streams, waterways, and those in low lying areas, you are requested to be watchful,” he said.

“Parents are advised to keep children away from swimming in rivers and playing in flooded drains and to monitor their whereabouts at all times.

“Flooded drains may lead to flooded roads. Motorists are requested to drive with care.

“We also advice the public to boil all drinking water.”

An improvement in weather is expected as the trough weakens and moves away from the group with rain to ease from tomorrow.

Following the trough, a cool change is expected as a southerly wind flow extends onto the country from the South. This change sees showers confining to the eastern and interior parts of the larger islands while western and northern parts of the country to experience cool and sunny conditions. Cool nights are on the way in the coming days as a result.

For Mariners: A strong wind warning remains in force for Yasawa & Mamanuca and southwest Viti Levu Waters. South to southeast winds 20 to 25 knots, rough seas with moderate southwest swells are forecasted.

For mariners

For the rest of Fiji waters, Southeast winds 15 to 20 knots can be expected with moderate to rough seas. Moderate southwest swells. Visibility will be poor in areas of heavy rain.

Members of the public are advised to monitor weather reports at all times.
