Interior schools will not be ignored under the Bainimarama Government, says Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy made this statement during the Tau Primary School’s 75th anniversary in Nadroga yesterday.

He said Government worked hard to uplift standards in rural schools to be on par with urban schools.

“It is a shame when you see infrastructure falling apart and look at the timber rotting away.

“This is unfortunate but we have begun. We are steadily assuring the community here that we know the situation out there and we are here to assist and are working very hard on it.”

He said this was because it had been ignored by previous governments.

“Now the Baimarama government gives attention to interior and maritime school schools which have been neglected for long,” Mr Reddy said.

He congratulated the community and the school for its rich history since establishment in its 1941.

Its first enrolment was an intake of 64 students with an age group from four to 17 years from Tau, Nakorokula, Bavu, Nabou, Lomawai, and Navutu.

Later in that year, it was called  Tau Government School until 1997 when it was handed to the community to run.

Interestingly, one of the present wooden buildings which still stands and used by students was from the American soldiers at the Momi Gun Site during World War II where it was used as the barracks for the American soldiers.
