Team Fiji weightlifter Apolonia Vaivai (pictured) finished 11th in the 69kg women’s weightlifting category at the Rio Olympics yesterday. Vaivai had a lift of 88kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk with a total lift of 201 kg which was also her new personal best.

The Taveuni native told SUNsports she was glad that she had finished near the top 10 mark.

“It was a good experience for me playing with champions from the world but it didn’t stop me from trying. I was expecting to be one of those top 10 but I didn’t but finishing in eleventh place is still good,” Vaivai said.

“I thank God for everything that he has done for me, the government, FASANOC,  weightlifting federation, my family, teammates and Manueli Tulo for helping me here in Rio.”
