The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy, is calling on every Fijian to ensure the safety of our students.

He did not mince his words while launching the “Zero – Accident Total Participation Campaign” at Tuva Primary School in Nadroga on Thursday.

Mr Reddy said: “We need to ensure that our system looks after the single most important stakeholder in the education system, that is, students.

“We can have the best education system, we can have reforms to plug the gaps that may be in the system, but if we do not have children, then what is the use of having this top notch education system.

“From the time they wear their uniforms, all stakeholders need to ensure that students’ safety is paramount when they travel to school, while they are at school and when they make their way back home.”

The minister also urged members of the public who were present to ask relevant questions to the stakeholders.

“We should not shy away from talking to and questioning stakeholders about their responsibilities. We should not shy away from telling stakeholders what they should do to protect our children,” he said.

Mr Reddy also acknowledged the continued support from JICA (Japan International Co-operation Agency) and Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations in ensuring the safety of students, both inside and outside of the school compound.
