It has been 115 years of operations in Fiji for Westpac Banking Corporation and the Australian bank is looking forward to another 115 years (and more) here.

Westpac branches around the country yesterday joined in the history created by our rugby sevens team and celebrated the bank’s own history.

What started off in Suva as Bank New South Wales in 1901 with only three staff members, today has branches in almost all towns and cities and employs more than 500 staff members.

It has undergone tremendous transformations over the years in terms of the banking services it provides and continues to undergo more changes with the evolving technology.

Plans hereon

Westpac Fiji general manager, Brett Hooker, emphasised they will continue to invest significantly in services to make it easier and convenient for their customers to bank.

“Traditionally the challenge that has faced this market is it is still heavily reliant on a lot of paper transactions within the system,” he said.

“So a key part of our plan is to move a big portion of that to online channels.

“This effectively is taking banking to the customers rather than coming into the branches which is the feedback from the customers we get which is what they want.

“That is probably the most significant plan we have at the moment for the short term.

“So we are very much committed to this market. We have been here for 115 years and we are looking forward to the next 115 years in Fiji.”

Mr Hooker noted Fiji plays a crucial part in the trade flows from their customers and businesses in Australia and New Zealand through Fiji into Asia.

“And so that’s a big part of strategy for Westpac Fiji,” he said.

Message to customers

Mr Hooker’s message for customers was: “For us to be here in Fiji and to have the history that we have – it is about our loyal customers who inspire us to grow and thrive in a market like this. So thank you for being loyal to us.”

He said that also applies to their staff members who are at the core of what they do.

“We have magnificent staff across our business who loyally serve our customers,” he said.
