These awards are for my children, said 63-year-old Marica Bulimasei of Nayarabale village, Cakaudrove, Macuata.

Ms Bulimasei was one of many who received awards at the Fijian Arts and Craft Awards ceremony. The ceremony, which was officiated by Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, took place at the National Craft exhibition, at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

Over 20 crafters were presented with awards for their work at the exhibition. Their crafts will be on display during this Vodafone Hibiscus Festival week.

Vanua Clay Fiji director, Taito Lawakele, of Nacava, Votualevu, Nadi, said it was his second year in the craft business, he was happy to be recognised for his unique designs and works.

“This is an opportunity for me to grow my business and I want everyone to keep a piece of Fiji with them,” Mr Lawakele said.

Seventy-two-year-old Ulamila Vuidreketi said she never expected to win, but she was more than happy and thankful to her family for their support in her success.

“Without my family’s support I know I wouldn’t have reached where I am today.”

Mr Koya said it was important to maintain our arts and craft to maintain our unique cultural identity.

While officiating at the Vodafone Arena yesterday, he said our cultural and crafts identity defines who we are.

“With such activity of arts and craft, it shows our nation and culture are preserved,” Mr Koya said.
