Celebration Talks Underway

Team Fiji and Government are still having talks in regards to the celebration set for next week in Suva.
Team Fiji chef de mission Cathy Wong confirmed to SUNsports yesterday that plans for the grand celebration are currently underway and details would be released soon.
The celebration is for the Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens team for winning the country’s first ever gold medal in the Olympic Games.
“We are currently discussing with Government on the details of this celebration,” she said.
“Government has declared August 22, a public holiday where we will have a combined celebration for Team Fiji athletes.
“Government will also be awarding our gold medal winners on the day but it will be different to the event FASANOC will host.”
Wong also confirmed that FASANOC would organise a special dinner for Team Fiji on August 27 hosted by Team Fiji sponsors who will also be awarding the athletes for their achievements.
Wong was the proudest chef de mission from the Pacific islands after the Fijian rugby sevens team won gold at the Deodoro Stadium. She couldn’t hold back her tears on the night and said the win was phenomenal to the nation and the South Pacific region as well.
“Having this gold medal is phenomenal to the people of Fiji, we came with a mission to stand on the podium and the gold medal was a bonus.
“The boys just put up a positive performance, day-by-day and like I said it’s just phenomenal. For a tiny nation, with limited resources, small budget, the boys came here and won gold not only for Fiji but they have also done this for the Pacific,” she added.
