Holding their church services in makeshift tents have failed to dampen the spirit of Vanuabalavu villagers in Lau.

The victims of Cyclone Winston have arrived in groups to Suva to be part of the Methodist Church of Fiji annual conference this week.

Susui Village clergyman Ilisoni Vuli said more than 500 villagers from the island were expected to be part of the church’s annual conference.

However, the delegation was not able to take part in the Festival of Praise singing in choirs as most villagers were still trying to recover from Tropical Cyclone Winston.

He said they had sacrificed enough to be at the conference.

“Our island was one of the worst affected by the cyclone in February; we have been trying to recover for the last few months as the cyclone had left many on the island homeless,” Mr Vuli said.

He said even though the cyclone had brought devastation on the island, it had also brought about changes in their lives.

“The cyclone had taught a great lesson too,” Mr Vuli said.

“It has moulded us to become closer with God; before I can say that we were rebellious towards God’s calling but after the cyclone hit us, I can see changes among the villagers.”
