Man Who Punched Wife Sentenced To 12 Months

A man, who punched his pregnant wife and threatened her with a knife, was yesterday jailed for 12 months, six of them suspended.

Suva Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne told Varinava Naburelevu, 38, “You put her and your unborn child in danger by your behaviour.

“Your behaviour needs to be denounced and a message needs to be given to the society that violence against women is not tolerated in this country by the court.”

Naburelevu had pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal intimidation.

On July 29 this year, Naburelevu went home and had an argument with his wife. As a result he punched her three times on her head and shoulder causing injuries as per her medical report.

He then warned her and told her not to come back home or else he would kill her with a knife.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for the offence of Criminal Intimidation and eight months for Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm to be served concurrently.

Naburelevu has to serve six months in the Correction Centre and the balance of six months will be suspended for three years.
