The struggle of making nine trips a day, walking to a water filling point about 50 metres from their home to fetch water for drinking, washing, cooking and bathing has ended for a family in upper Veisari, outside Lami.

Government, through Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) successful installation of a pressure management system in the area, has fixed the intermittent supply issue faced by the family for the past 19 years.

The Tukana family first moved to their leased home in Osonabukete Settlement when the man of the house, 73-year-old Setareki Tukana, retired from the Fiji Police Force in 1997. On August 16, they celebrated receiving the flow of piped water in the comfort of their home for the first time.

“Ever since we moved here, I knocked on the right doors for water assistance, but nothing positive eventuated out of it,” Mr Tukana said.

“The then Water Supply Department officials used to come and just conduct some pipe adjustment works but the water pressure always didn’t reach my home.

“Sometimes, there was water at the filling point but most of the days, there used to be no supply at all. I visited WAF, raising my plight with the authorities there and am just so grateful that they attended to it accordingly.”

Mr Tukana said words could not describe how thankful they were to the Government of the day and WAF for assisting them “greatly” with their water supply.

“All we can say is thank you very much for the tremendous assistance,” he said.
