Sustainable development is the way forward for the North, says 23-year-old Alitia Epi.

Sponsored by the one of the biggest employers in Vanua Levu, Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC), Ms Epi is one of the 10 queen contestants vying for a top spot in the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The only girl in a family of three, Ms Epi said it was an honour to be provided with such a platform to educate the community on an issue she felt needed much publicity.

“My message to the public is to promote sustainable development since the drive for economic and social development has placed pressure on our resources,” Ms Epi said.

“Therefore it is vital that the north strengthen its resilience to the impacts done to the environment.”

The well-spoken Qamea Island native from Cakaudrove said sustainable development could only be brought by if we worked together as a community.

“It is not an easy task but if we as a community work hand in hand in promoting this, we will achieve a greener North as well as work towards our way in building a better community for Fiji,” Ms Epi said.

Her hobbies include reading and travelling with an utmost goal to be simple and confident in life.

The FSC has over the years been actively giving back to the Northern community by winning the Miss Charity title for the past seven years.

Ms Epi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management Public Administration/Human Resources and Tourism studies and is currently employed by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority in Labasa.

The week-long festival starts this Saturday at Subrail Park, Labasa.
