Police have warned that they will be ready to deal with anyone who tries to spoil the celebrations for our triumphant Rio sevens rugby gold medallists.

Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho has dismissed rumours based on an alleged prophecy that there would be trouble at the celebrations.

“We have a very gullible part of our society that thrive on these types of things. They sit around a tanoa and when there is nothing useful to discuss they tend to discuss these things,” he said.

“I just sent a gentleman away who came to me with this matter.

“I said to him go and tell the person who is telling you that something is going to happen that we will be ready for anybody who thinks they are going to destabilise this celebration.”

Brigadier-General Qiliho said: “Fiji has been happy with the gold medal win in Rio and that’s another day Police will work hard during the seven’s celebrations.”

Mr Qiliho said “people just can’t appreciate when there is a good win.”

He reassured the public that the Police would be out in force to ensure that the celebrations went without a hitch.
