Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Denarau Corporation Limited (DCL) to roll out Fiber to the Home (FTTH) and Very-high-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) technology for residential customers on Denarau, Nadi.

This new technology is part of TFL’s national broadband strategy that is focused on ensuring greater accessibility, availability and affordability of internet and high speed broadband connectivity to the people and businesses across Fiji.

FTTH will involve extension of TFL’s fiber right into customers’ homes, providing download speeds up to 100Mbps. The VDSL technology will provide a more reliable connection and enable faster download and upload speeds up to 50 Mbps.

Telecom Fiji chief executive officer Mothilal De Silva said: “We are working towards providing high speed, seamless internet services to our customers and are excited to deliver the next evolution of super-fast broadband connectivity to Denarau area where there is a high contribution to the national economy.

“We strongly believe Fiji follows closely behind the trends of the developed world in which both ‘Fiber to the Curb’ (FTTC) and ‘Fiber to the Home’ (FTTH) deliver high speed broadband access. In both these technologies that is being rolled out across Fiji, we bring the exchange more closer to premises while effectively utilising our copper and fiber network infrastructure for last mile access.

“With the proliferation of video applications like Netflix and YouTube and business services moving to cloud based solutions, these new technologies introduced by TFL are becoming more of a requirement to residential and business enterprises located in Denarau.

“Therefore by deploying fiber infrastructure, TFL is future-proofing the network infrastructure to be able to meet the bandwidth demands of the future.

“Surging demand for Triple Play services (Voice, Video, Data) and requirement for High Definition TV can effectively be met by multiple technologies introduced by TFL progressively.

“We will use different complimentary fixed and wireless technology solutions to fit into different market needs.

“To complement our fixed broadband infrastructure, we are rolling out 4G LTE technology utilising the APT700MHz spectrum, which provides a wider coverage and enhanced performance compared to the higher frequency bands.

“This ensures that TFL will be able to provide high speed internet services in areas that were previously not serviceable”

Chairman of Denarau Corporation Limited, Nigel Skeggs said: “This win-win partnership between Denarau Corporation and Telecom Fiji will provide immense benefits to dwellers in Denarau residential and business estate that extend more than 630 acres. Residences and businesses in this complex will be able to access high speed broadband services that are offered by TFL in a dedicated manner.

“Our objective is to provide excellent infrastructure and utility services like telecommunication to our tenants who demand the state of the art technologies like Fiber to Home.

“We also would like to be a trend setter in technology adoption. In near future our tenants will be able to access high speed broadband to cater to the demands like HDTV”.
