Expert: Not All Physical Pain Is Physically Inflicted

Not all physical aches are physically inflicted says a neurosurgeon. In some cases, it can be caused by emotional stress, Dr Kathir Nadanachandran of the Sai Medical Team of Australia said.

The lack of space given to express one’s feelings could lead to body pains, he said.

“Psychosomatic disorder is where people are unable to cope with issues in life.

“So we have people who have very vague body pains where we cannot put a finger on the spot where the pain is,” Dr Nadanachandran said.

“Some body aches experienced are not necessarily caused by physical body issues but by your brain.

“This could be caused by stress from domestic violence, neglect by family when children are away, financial in farming communities and many others.”

One example is domestic violence. Most victims who encounter this form of abuse can suffer physically, he said.

“This occurs when they are not given space to express themselves so this is manifested through body pains,” the team leader said.

Dr Nadanachandran said Sai Medical Unit’s decision to bring a team of psychologists and psychiatrists to help detect this illness was triggered through their medical diagnosis from a patient recently.

“We have brought a psychologist team with us to help those in these situations.

“Sometimes the people are reluctant to open up, but the psychologists and psychiatrists gently probe them and when brought up, they analyse the issues,” Dr Nadanachandran said.

He urged people to have regular check-ups and not keep emotional hurt inside. The team were offering free medical services in parts of Vanua Levu last week.

The organisation was offering free medical services at Nadogo Central College outside Labasa last week.
