Both sides of the main street in Labasa Town were crowded as people came in numbers to witness the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North float procession on Saturday.

There were cheering and dancing amongst the crowd as the procession advanced to the Subrail Park grounds.

In his opening speech, Special Administrator for Savusavu and Labasa Town Vijay Chand, thanked the people for turning up in large numbers to support the annual event.

“I hope you find this year’s activities exciting and rewarding,” Mr Chand said.

“This is my eighth year of engagement with the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North and what I have learnt and noticed over the years that it takes a dedicated and hardworking team to organise a festival at this level.”

He said the festival’s theme ‘Greening the North’ was a timely one and it spoke volume with regards to growth, sustainability and prosperity.

“Greening the North signifies the passion and pride we have for economic prosperity in the Northern Division.”

A member of the public present, Kalara Bou of Nailawa, Labasa said this was something she never missed as it was one of the most important events in the North.

“I came with my husband and two children to see and be a part of this,” Ms Bou said.

“This is a much anticipated event for the people here, and like every other year, we are here again this year.”
